A five million (P5M) worth Seaweeds Processing Plant, a pilot project for the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao to produce Alkali Treated Chips, will soon operate in Parang, Shariff Kabunsuan Province and the nearby provinces to the benefit of the seaweed farmers in the area.
This was an output of the 1st Seaweeds Congress in the ARMM last February 27-28 at Estosan Hotel, Cotabato City which was spearheaded by the Seaweeds Industry Association of the Philippines (SIAP) and BFAR-ARMM.
ARMM being the top producer of Seaweeds in the Philippine for export gives justice to putting up a processing plant within its region.
The plant is intended to address some of the issues and concerns of the seaweeds farmers to increase price of their produce to sustain productivity and less cost of operation.
The plant requirement for raw seaweeds is at four thousand kilos (4,000kls/day) which will produce 250 kilos of chips per day. A series of consultations with local farmers were conducted to ensure supply of raw materials.
Its consultant is Mr. Maximo Ricohemoso of the Datingbayan Foundation based in Cebu City.
This project will be replicated in other parts of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao after this pilot project's success.
The project will spur economic activities in the area, generate employment, and increase revenues. Furthermore, this contribute in uplifting the living conditions of the seaweeds farmers as well as the small and medium enterprises.
